The still life paintings of 17th century European & Dutch painters are the inspiration of my current work. Much like Italian painter Caravaggio, my still life work is produced "nocturne", with high contrast highlights and deep shadows. Caravaggio also inspired me in the liberal use empty space in my images. My work also uses similar very targeted & controlled lighting. Dutch painter Willem Claesz Heda’s use of the reflective qualities of metal dining vessels has also inspired my current work. In “Lemon Portraitâ€ù I use a silver pitcher to create a distorted reflection of the main subject matter, which carries the colors & highlights into the otherwise shadowed depths of the composition.
