Artist Statement
A scientist by training, but an artist by DNA, I was first introduced to molten metal at age 11 in a metal work class in England. Intrigued by the liquid properties of metal and driven by my love of jewelry, I naturally gravitated towards casting techniques during my subsequent pursuit of goldsmithing classes. A class in the ancient technique of cuttlefish casting opened up the possibilities of the cuttlebone as an organic vessel to explore casting different materials directly into molten metal. The cuttlebone presents the perfect canvas; its layers can be peeled back to reveal rich textures and patterns that mimic ripples on the sand. Using these textures and patterns to guide my designs, I incorporate them into hand carved molds to capture fluidity in my pieces reminiscent of the seashore. I often use gemstones as focal points to create harmony and balance that is visually and tactilely pleasing.
