Artist Statement

Music and culture are my inspiration. When I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1980 I was devoted to the abstract expressionist genre of painting. I created energetic color field paintings executed with a highly articulated and psychological use of color. After an intense investigation of African American artists, I intentionally created Neo-African American art. For over 20 years I created paintings that visually articulated the African American way of life. For the past two years I returned to drawing and creating abstract art. I have devoted much of my creative time to exploring the abstract expressionist genre. I naturally inject my own experience as an African American into the work. My entire career as an artists has been devoted to exploration.
