Artist’s Statement
W.R. van Elburg
The everyday world provides countless opportunities for artistic expression; the mundane becomes art when seen through the compound lenses of the camera and the photographer’s eye.
My work attempts to draw the viewer in; to enable them to create their own narrative regarding the image, as opposed to force-feeding them my own vision; allowing a story to unfold in real time, instead of simply as a captured moment of the past.
By often breaking the ‘Rules’ of composition; changing perspective and playing with eye contact during the initial shoot, and later experimenting with background, color and light during editing and digital enhancement, an image emerges which is at the same time both “real” and “unreal”.
To my mind, it is this frisson which makes the images compelling.
