Artist Statement
I have always regarded trees with a sense of wonder. Growing up and living in rural western Pennsylvania, they have been a constant presence in my life. As a lasting vestige of the beauty of trees, wood contains an intriguing account of each tree's life and times. These tales fascinate me. In my work, I pay reverence to these stories while adding my own unique touch. I select wood for beauty, character, and the presence of natural voids. Insect holes, bark inclusions, knots, and other voids contribute to the complexity and individuality of wood. I use them as design elements, drawing attention to these flaws by inlaying semi-precious stone, shell, and metal in all my work. I create both functional and purely artistic pieces.
